Our Christmas Tree Decoration

To our dear European friends,

Today, students in Years 1 and 2, aged between 5 and 8, made a variety of decorations which we are delighted to be sending to you. They have each made one, but only a select few will be leaving Santander, the rest are on their way to be hung up in our corridors.

These decorations replicate the baubles we hang on our Christmas trees here in Spain, and what’s more they also have pictures on them which are typical Christmas images. For example, some of them depict the Virgin Mary, Joseph and Baby Jesus who are the focal point of the famous Nativity Scene; a scene which is reproduced in many family homes at this time of year in remembrance of Jesus’ birth.

Another design depicts the Three Wise Men, who as well as bringing presents to Baby Jesus, deliver gifts to all the children in Spain. They come from the East, riding on camels. Traditionally, we leave them biscuits and a glass of milk (or anything else we can find in the kitchen) and, of course, water for their thirsty camels. This way, while they deliver all their gifts they can keep their strength up during their journey.

An array of other significant symbols can be found on the other baubles. For example: the angel who notifies all the shepherds of Jesus’ birth and the bell that represents the joyful toll of the announcement. 

The older students will already have told you a little bit about our own celebrations and traditions, but if you have any questions about our decorations please don’t hesitate to ask.

Queridos compañeros europeos:

Hoy, los alumnos de primer ciclo, es decir, de 1º y 2º de primaria, de entre 5 a 8 años han realizado los adornos que os enviaremos. Han hecho cada uno el suyo, pero solo unos pocos saldrán de Santander, el resto adornarán nuestro pasillo.

Estos adornos se asemejan a las típicas bolas que colgamos de los árboles de Navidad, y además tienen imágenes características de nuestra Navidad. Por ejemplo, en uno de ellos aparecen la Virgen María, San José y el niño Jesús, que forman parte del portal de Belén con el que la mayoría de familias decora su casa en recuerdo al nacimiento de Jesús.

En otro de los adornos aparecen los tres Reyes Magos, que son los que al igual que al niño Jesús, traen los regalos a todos los niños de España. Ellos vienen de Oriente, montados en  camellos. Es costumbre dejarles galletas y un vaso de leche (o lo que se nos ocurra) y agua para los camellos. Así, mientras dejan los regalos pueden reponer fuerzas.

En el resto de adornos aparecen otros símbolos muy significativos en nuestras fiestas. Por ejemplo: El ángel que anunció el nacimiento de Jesús a los pastores y la campana que representa el resonar de estas durante estas fiestas.

Los alumnos más mayores ya os habrán contado todo sobre nuestras fiestas, pero si tenéis alguna pregunta sobre los adornos, no dudéis en preguntarnos.
