Grapes
In Spain, the most common tradition of New Year's Eve is the twelve grapes tradition. It consists of eating a grape for each chime given by the clock from Puerta del Sol in Madrid, the midnight of December 31.
This event is broadcasted live on television. The Spaniards, in their homes are waiting for the time of the first bell to eat the twelve grapes. A grape is eaten every three seconds, one for each chime.
Every city in Spain has a particular place to celebrate the grapes tradition. After the clock strikes twelve, it is very common to congratulate each other the new year with all the family and call everyone who is out. For this reason, the telephone lines are collapsed for several minutes. We say cheers while drinking champagne or cava.
